Holistic Dental Hygiene

Attacking Dis-ease begins with Prevention

Phase Contrast Microscope

To maintain a healthy mouth, it's essential to have a balanced biofilm. A biofilm is a collection of various microbes, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, that grow on surfaces in the mouth.

Understanding the composition of the biofilm is crucial. In our holistic practice, we use a microscope during each hygiene visit to evaluate the biofilm. We take a quick sample of subgingival plaque and examine it under the microscope. We assess whether the biofilm is healthy or if it poses a risk for dental and systemic diseases. If the biofilm is high-risk, we provide recommendations on daily oral hygiene and nutrition to help transform it into a healthy biofilm.

Diet and nutrition play a critical role in managing biofilm. We also check and discuss the pH of the mouth, as certain bacteria thrive in specific environments.

The goal is to create conditions that support beneficial bacteria while inhibiting pathogenic ones. This can be achieved through proper nutrition and oral hygiene, without the need for toxic or harsh chemicals.

The Use of Medical-Grade Ozone in Oral Hygiene

Medical-grade ozone, also known as activated oxygen, is widely utilized in the medical and dental fields across Europe and parts of South America. It's approved by the Conformité Européenne (CE), which is equivalent to the United States FDA, although it’s important to note that ozone is not FDA-approved. However, in my experience, it’s an excellent tool for treating bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections.

These types of infections are some of the most common challenges we face in dental hygiene, and ozone effectively eliminates them all. Unlike antibiotics, ozone doesn't carry the risk of developing antibiotic-resistant bacteria or causing allergic reactions, since it isn’t an antibiotic. Ozone consists of three oxygen molecules (O3). When it breaks down into O2 (oxygen), it kills bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, while simultaneously saturating the area with oxygen, which aids in wound healing.

Periodontal disease, in essence, is a significant wound. In our office, we use 100% ozonated water in our ultrasonic scalers, which is highly effective for removing subgingival biofilm. Ozonated water can also be used as a preprocedural rinse to reduce the microbes present in dental aerosols.

We also use ozone for sinus and ear insufflation as part of our unique and effective treatment of periodontal disease.
