Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that has gained popularity as a natural oral care technique. As a holistic dentist in Florida, I often get asked: Does it actually work? The answer is yes—when paired with good oral hygiene, oil pulling can support gum health, reduce bacteria, and even freshen breath.

What Is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling involves swishing natural oils (like sesame or coconut oil) in the mouth for 10–20 minutes. This helps reduce harmful bacteria and toxins while moisturizing oral tissues.

Benefits of Oil Pulling

  • Reduces harmful bacteria like Streptococcus mutans, a key contributor to cavities (Asokan et al., 2008).

  • Improves gum health by reducing plaque and gingivitis (Peedikayil et al., 2015).

  • Whitens teeth naturally by reducing surface stains.

  • Supports systemic health by lowering oral inflammation, which is linked to heart disease and diabetes.

How to Practice Oil Pulling

  1. Place 1 tablespoon of organic coconut or sesame oil in your mouth (add your favorite essential oil to make it even better)

  2. Swish gently for 10–20 minutes.

  3. Spit oil into a trash can (not sink, to avoid clogging pipes).

  4. Brush teeth afterwards

Oil pulling isn’t a replacement for brushing and flossing—but it’s a powerful addition to your oral wellness routine. At Amore Dentistry, we encourage patients to embrace safe, natural practices that support whole-body health.
